The Renewal and Pope Francis
THE CATHOLIC CHARISMATIC RENEWAL
RECEIVED IN PRIVATE AUDIENCE
BY HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCESCO
In an atmosphere of paternal warmth the Holy Father Pope Francis received this morning at the Apostolic Palace Michelle Moran, President of the International Catholic Charismatic Renewal Services (ICCRS) and
Matteo Calisi, President of the Catholic Fraternity of Charismatic Covenant Communities and Fellowships (CFCCCF): the two international bodies, with offices in the Vatican, established by the Holy See for the coordination of the activities of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the world.
The audience was of fundamental importance to deepen the bond of filial love and to express the sense of ecclesial responsibility of the great “current of grace” which emerged after the Second Vatican Council.
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal has been a providential response of the Holy Spirit in order to produce a New Pentecost in the Church according to the prophetic expectations of Blessed John XXIII. Pope Paul VI referred the Charismatic Renewal as “a chance for the Church and for the world.”
Blessed John Paul II wrote that “… One of the objectives is to safeguard the Catholic identity… encourage close links with the Bishops and with the Roman Pontiff. You have helped many people to have a strong sense of belonging to the Church” (Letter to the Catholic Fraternity, June 1st, 1998).
Pope Benedict XVI said “that one of the positive elements and aspects of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is precisely their emphasis on the charisms or gifts of the Holy Spirit and their merit lies in reminding the Church the actuality of the gifts” (Benedict XVI, 31st October 2008).
In the context of the conversation, which took place in the Private Studio of the Roman Pontiff, there was also a presentation of the proposed 3rd Worldwide Charismatic Priests’ Retreat, organized in collaboration with the Congregation for the Clergy (Rome 2015), and the Celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal (Rome 2017).
Another issue of importance which was discussed is the relationship with the Evangelical and Pentecostal churches, particularly in Argentina and Brazil. Meetings and dialogues have been carried out by the Communities of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal in collaboration with the Bishops and this is producing good fruit.
This audience with the Holy Father has a historical significance for the approximately 150 million charismatic Catholics worldwide belonging to this “current of grace” and which is also widespread in other denominations and Orthodox communities.
